When buying a gift for your significant other you want to buy them the best. You want to show you care with a great gift. But standing at the jewelry counter you see an identical pair of white gold earrings and silver hoop earrings. Which do you choose? What is the difference between the two metals?
Silver is a more common element and therefore a cheaper one. White gold is actually yellow gold that is mixed with at least one other white element (such as silver or palladium.) This mixture is generally harder that silver. Silver is also alloyed (or mixed) with other metals to make it less likely to tarnish.
White gold generally has a warmer shine. But both metals are easily tarnished by oils from your body or outside elements. Both can be easily cleaned with a quick dunk in ammonia and being dried with a soft cloth.
White gold is measured in karats like regular gold, the higher the karat, the higher the price. The most pure white gold rating you can find is generally around 17 karats.
So really, it comes down to your personal preference and price. Both are going to last a very long time and both are going to have a great shine. And obviously both make great gifts.
